Fatty liver disease has become one of the most common liver disorders worldwide. However, in most cases it remains asymptomatic for a long time. As a result, many patients learn about their diagnosis incidentally during a routine health check-up, an abdominal ultrasound examination, or a biochemical blood test. According to Altynai Kabisheva, Head of Multidisciplinary Inpatient Department at the Medical Centre Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, fatty liver disease is not only a liver condition but also an important indicator of underlying metabolic disturbances. “The greatest danger of fatty liver disease is that it can progress for years without causing any symptoms. If left undiagnosed and untreated, it may eventually lead to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer,” explains the doctor.
At the Multidisciplinary Inpatient Department of the Medical Centre Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the diagnosis of fatty liver disease is based on a comprehensive approach. The evaluation begins with a consultation with a gastroenterologist, who assesses the patient’s lifestyle, risk factors, and the presence of any underlying medical conditions. Laboratory tests are then performed to evaluate liver function, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, and to rule out other liver diseases. When indicated, additional imaging studies, including abdominal ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are carried out. As part of the hospital’s hepatology services, specialists work closely with endocrinologists, cardiologists, and clinical nutritionists. This multidisciplinary approach makes it possible to determine the stage of the disease, assess the risk of liver fibrosis, and develop the most appropriate individualized treatment plan for each patient.
According to Dr. Altynai Kabisheva, the liver possesses a remarkable capacity for regeneration. If fatty liver disease is diagnosed at an early stage and the underlying risk factors are addressed promptly, both the structure and function of the liver can be restored to a significant extent. Achieving this requires maintaining a healthy body weight, following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and effectively managing associated medical conditions. “The liver has a unique ability to regenerate. The most important thing is to pay attention to its health in time and begin treatment as early as possible,” emphasized Dr. Altynai Kabisheva.
