Eight hours of sleep does not always mean proper rest. If a person regularly wakes up tired, feels sleepy during the day and has difficulty concentrating on everyday tasks, the cause may be a sleep disorder that requires a specialist's attention.
"Sleep disorders are often caused not only by stress, but also by anxiety, circadian rhythm disruptions, restless legs syndrome or sleep apnea," explains Alfiya Abzhanova, a specialist at the Sleep Laboratory of the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
One warning sign is regular snoring, especially when accompanied by pauses in breathing during sleep, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness. Such symptoms may indicate obstructive sleep apnea. In chronic sleep disorders, sleep no longer restores the body fully, which can negatively affect memory, attention and overall health.
At the Sleep Laboratory of the Medical Center Hospital, respiratory monitoring and polysomnography are used to identify such disorders. Respiratory monitoring allows up to 20,000 measurements per night and can diagnose obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Polysomnography, in turn, records brain activity via EEG, heart rate, breathing, and eye and limb movements. These methods help diagnose apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and other sleep disorders.
Once a diagnosis is established, specialists select the necessary treatment. The Medical Center Hospital uses CPAP therapy to treat obstructive sleep apnea, as well as BiPAP therapy for certain breathing disorders.
A regular sleep schedule, comfortable bedroom conditions and limiting caffeine in the second half of the day can help improve sleep quality. However, if fatigue persists even after a full night's rest, you should not attribute it solely to stress or a heavy workload.
The specialists of the Sleep Laboratory at the Medical Center Hospital help identify the cause of sleep disorders and determine an appropriate treatment approach. Timely diagnosis is an important step toward proper rest, good well-being and maintaining health.
