World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day 2024 is celebrated on February 4th. It is very important that any person can receive timely diagnosis and prompt, high-quality treatment, regardless of status, financial capabilities and ethnicity. Medicine should be accessible to everyone. Every year, about 4 million people in the world can be saved by following measures for the prevention and early detection of cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. This is one of the most dangerous diseases of humanity, from which many people die every year. The disease is insidious and changeable, it has the ability to evolve and over the years increasingly affects young people and children. Over the years of research, scientists have made great progress in finding an effective treatment, but work is still ongoing.

A cancerous tumor may not make itself felt for a long time and develop in the body asymptomatically. Therefore, it is often detected late, when it is no longer possible to fight.

Despite its seriousness and dire consequences, cancer is not always a death sentence. It is possible to live with this disease for many years if you receive timely treatment, and in some cases it can be stopped even in the later stages. However, many still believe that the detection of neoplasms in the body always leads to death and treatment in such a situation is pointless. To eradicate such opinions and disseminate correct and vital information among the population, Cancer Day was established in 2005 and has since been an annual event.

Measures to reduce the risk of disease

  • Quit alcohol and smoking. It has been revealed that smoking is the cause of about 15 types of cancer. Also, reducing alcohol consumption will reduce the likelihood of cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, intestines, and breast.
  • Sports activities. Physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of developing diseases such as breast, liver, kidney, uterine, and ovarian cancer.
  • Reducing time spent in the sun. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and tanning beds increases the likelihood of developing skin cancer.
  • Adding green tea to your diet. It contains polyphenol, which slows down the growth of cancer cells.
  • Regular check-ups. Once a year it is necessary to undergo a medical examination for the timely detection and treatment of possible diseases, including the most severe ones. Detecting cancer at an early stage will increase the chance of recovery.
  • Vaccination. It has been proven that about 16% of all cancers appear from chronic diseases caused by viruses. Today there are vaccines against hepatitis B and human papillomavirus that can protect against the possible development of liver and cervical cancer.
