Reengineering of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery in the Republic of Kazakhstan

A group of scientists from the Medical Center of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan has developed and introduced an innovative surgical direction “Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery” (BMS) in Kazakhstan. BMS is a reconstructive surgery on the stomach and intestines aimed at improving the hormonal background of a person with pathology, eliminating insensitivity to one’s own insulin (insulin resistance).

Diseases associated with metabolic syndrome in most countries of the world determine premature morbidity and mortality. In Kazakhstan, every fifth citizen has metabolically unhealthy obesity, its prevalence is increasing, hence, there is a need for the development of bariatric and metabolic surgery, and the interdisciplinary approach provides a systemic solution to this extremely important problem for human health.

This innovative surgical direction is undoubtedly a great breakthrough in surgery, and has a great contribution to practical healthcare not only in the regions of the Republic, but also beyond its borders. The results of work of scientists have innovative character. In addition, already have feedback not only from medical institutions of the country, but also from patients who have received real help in solving their health problems.

Thanks to the purposeful work of the authors, a new specialty “Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery” was included in the list of specialties and specializations of workers with higher medical education, a certification course for training doctors in the new specialty was introduced, the stages and rules of providing this type of care were conceptually arranged, and a clinical protocol for the diagnosis and treatment of morbid obesity and metabolic syndrome was developed and scientifically substantiated.

The mentioned scientific and practical work on the topic “Development and implementation of conceptual re-engineering of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery in the Republic of Kazakhstan - multidisciplinary approach” is nominated for the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of science and technology named after Al-Farabi. The main idea of the work nominated for the State Prize is surgical prevention of premature atherosclerotic changes in high-risk patients with cholesterol metabolism disorders and micro and macrovascular lesions in diabetes mellitus.
