CHIEF ARRHYTHMOLOGIST OF MEDICAL CENTER HOSPITAL OF THE PRESIDENT’S AFFAIRS ADMINISTRATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN AYAN ABDRAKHMANOV: “THE HEART FEELS EVERYTHING”

Modern arrhythmology, or electrophysiology, has become a separate clinical discipline. It has officially emerged  in 1992 in the United States due to the rapid development of modern medical technologies, with the initial aim of determining the risk of sudden cardiac death and the development of measures for its prevention.
Just like many modern scientific and practical directions, this discipline is a synthesized specialty that emerged at the junction of cardiology, cardiac surgery, radiology, anesthesiology-resuscitation, mathematics and engineering. The importance of this clinical area for modern medicine can hardly be overestimated.

Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan employs physicians working in all areas of medicine, including arrhythmology.

Ayan Abdrakhmanov - MD, associate professor, president of the Kazakh Society of Arrhythmologists, representative of Kazakhstan in the European Heart Rhythm Association, chief arrhythmologist of the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Graduated from Semipalatinsk State Medical Academy with a degree in General Medicine. His specializations are in cardiology, arrhythmology (clinical electrophysiology, electrocardio stimulation), echocardiography, daily ECG and BP monitoring, emergency therapy, anesthesiology and intensive care.
He interned on interventional methods of heart rhythm disorders treatment in Austria, Hungary, Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic. He shared some insights into his profession, opening the door to a field not quite familiar to us called “Arrhythmology” and told us what the heart is.

- How many surgeries have you performed in your career?

“I don’t count the number of operations. My first concern is the health of the patient. When I go in for the surgery, I do not think about the amount of time, but about how I can help and give my best”, - says Ayan Abdrakhmanov.

- How did you come to be an arrhythmologist?

“I started out as a cardiologist. I graduated from clinical residency at the Semipalatinsk Medical Academy. In 2001, I started practicing interventional arrhythmology. This is a very high-tech specialty. We depend on the development of technology and innovations in medicine. It’s important to follow the trends”, says the arrhythmologist at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Ayan Abdrakhmanov performs all types of surgeries for heart rhythm disorders at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan. For the first time in the CIS he performed implantation of electrode-free pacemaker Micra and high-density mapping operations with HD Grid catheter. He practiced surgeries without fluoroscopy in pregnant women and children. He performs more than 350 surgeries a year.

- What is the difference between a cardiac surgeon and an arrhythmologist?

“Arrhythmologists always speculate a little. For example, cardiac surgeons work on the open heart, but arrhythmologists work through the vessels. You always plan ahead in your head, because you cannot see and feel the heart with your hands. So you have to feel how you are going to act in current or other situation”, the arrhythmologist of the highest-category has shared.

- Final question. What do you think the heart is?

“I will answer in a bit of a joking way. The brain, as we know, is responsible for the workings of the body. It is the main organ in human anatomy. The impulse comes from it, but we feel it with the heart. This organ is responsible for the so-called “sixth sense”, for falling in love or intuition. Of course, the head is calculating, but the heart feels everything”, - says arrhythmologist Ayan Abdrakhmanov.

On October 6-7, an international conference with the European Heart Rhythm Association will be held at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan. All the leading arrhythmologists from Spain, Austria, Turkey, Hungary, Germany, Central Asia, etc. will come to the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan to lecture and conduct joint master classes with the Hospital physicians. This event will allow physicians of the Medical Center Hospital of President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan to improve their qualifications and to share their experiences with leading arrhythmologists from around the world.
